About the Golden Child
This is a translation of the original text “Vom Goldenen Kind”
But when finally the Ancient Rulers, who had decided that their spirit should rise above fate, had offered up everything necessary to seal and banish the world-corroding doubt of the Ratio, when their most formidable weapon, the Xerikans had been constructed and the seal prepared, the war for Mitraspera’s creation reached its final point.
The Pact of the Nine, made against all laws of nature, eventually prevailed and Ratio was banned. But this victory came at a terrible price.
The Sceptics had quickly realised that the Xerikans, powerful as they were, were kindred to them in their lack of any soul. And so it was a simple task for the Masters of Ratio to gain dominion over those golemoids and use them as weapons of destruction against their creators.
Nevertheless, the might of the Nine surpassed that of the World Doubt, and victory belonged to the alliance. However, none from the alliance’s ranks could take the last step, for closing the seal would require one to be beyond all doubt, as even the smallest question on one’s mind would be enough to fall here. And none of the rulers was free from doubt at this time.
But when the situation seemed hopeless, Marien de Vo Canar, the Nyame of the North and the Pact’s Patroness of Magica, settled on a last resort - probably one of the most gruesome ever devised.
The mother took the soul of her own firstborn daughter, who had not even grown out of infancy. She tore it out of the innocent child’s body and implanted it into the Xerikan machine creature, so that it would be immune to doubt. For only the utterly pure soul of a child would be unimpeachable by Ratio, Marien had realised.
We will probably never know whether madness, desperation or something else drove Marien’s mind to commit this deed; but it was a success.
The last Xerikan, the unholy and unnaturally created machine, animated with the sheer purity of newborn life, resisted the searing power of the World Doubt and closed the seal.
What happened then lies in the dark. What seems certain, however, is that the shattered soul was released from its artificial vessel. But it did not return to Kral Quihenya, the primordial soul of the world, to gracefully enter into it, as would otherwise be the case. Instead, in a curious and difficult to comprehend manner, the child’s soul both became a part of Kral Quihenya and remained in its own childlike form.
It remains a mystery how or why this odd metamorphosis happened or by whom it might have been caused. And just as cryptical was what Magica prophesied when the settlers received the soul known today as “the Golden Child” as a gift from the Elements: “This may be your greatest curse or your greatest blessing.” What this means may be anyone’s guess.
The Golden Child appeared to the settlers years ago already, as a mysterious oracle in the shape of a little girl with golden hair and golden robe, in whose eyes the light of the eyes shone.
The Forsaken, too, showed great interest in this eerie child, and Argus himself seized her and abducted her into a Void sphere. It was only thanks to the indefatigable efforts of the settlers loyal to the Elements that she could be saved. The meaning of this Forsaken deed remained unclear. Since then, the child has appeared in many a vision, and has last been seen in her corporeal form at the summoning of the Tivar Karr’Assil.
Nowadays, many settlers and especially the followers of the aforementioned order of the Tivar Karr’Assil revere the Golden Child as the embodiment and voice of the land’s soul, and occasionally call her by the name of “Kral Quihenya”.
